Inaugural Meeting of the Irish Association of Sexual Medicine
The inaugural meeting of the Irish Association of Sexual Medicine, which has been in gestation for many years, was held on 11th May 2013 in Dun Laoghaire. The association is affiliated to the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM). Dr Tom Kelly of the Everyman Centre has been co-opted to the committee.
We were very fortunate in having world renowned speakers such as Dr Ian Banks (Men’s Health) and Dr Malcolm Carruthers (Testosterone replacement therapy pioneer) and many other experts in their fields.
The programme was very varied and included topics such as Erectile Dysfunction and Cardiovascular Disease. It is now recognised that erectile dysfunction (especially in older men) often precedes and predicts heart disease. Intervention to prevent heart disease at this stage would prevent much suffering and premature deaths.
The talk on Testosterone Replacement Therapy was a reminder that it is becoming increasingly accepted that many men suffer symptoms such as diminished sexual desire, decreased potency, depression, memory loss, morning stiffness and dry skin as a result of deficiency of the hormone Testosterone. The use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy to relieve these symptoms is becoming more widespread.
Mr TED McDermott spoke about urinary problems in men and their relationship to prostate enlargement. The possible benefit (and the widespread use ) of Saw Palmetto for these types of problems was discussed.
Dr B O’Donnell from Belfast spoke about the association between Haemochromatosis and sexual dysfunction. Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition and very common in northern Europeans.
Following the success of the inaugural meeting we hope that these meetings will become at least an annual event that in the not too distant future we will host a meeting of The European Society for Sexual Medicine in Ireland.
